    Understanding regional / cultural dialects

Let's check the Score Board!

Period 7 -  1 point on the board for Monday - nice.

Period 8 - 0.  A big fat goose egg for Monday.

Ahhh the ways of the Ninja ...

Eliminate answers you know aren't right.

Don't keep on changing your answer, your gut is usually right

"never, always, and every" mean that the statement must be true all of the time.  These are almost always FALSE!

next,

Dr. Dre Says ...

Take notes on all of this please - it's all testable.

Vocabulary -

adjectives: words that describe nouns.

thesis: your main argument or point in an essay

setting: where a story takes place.   Like the forest for Shrek

First,

Let's get a better idea about setting.

Watch this clip of Rocky training

Adjectives and setting are like cousins.  They are related.

To Do:

1. Describe Rocky
2. Describe how Rocky trains
3. Describe how the Russian trains
4. From this one clip, can you tell who is the hero - and who is the villain?

Can you get a feel for a movie's setting and plot from one little clip?

Next,

A Thesis is your main point in an essay.

It's what you plan to argue, or prove.

To Do:

First - Read this group of facts

  • Bigfoot is spotted in California forests all the time
  • Native American tribes have legends of Bigfoot
  • Bigfoot has been spotted in all 50 states
  • Bigfoot has been seen in Ohio
  • Bigfoot has been spotted in almost every country in the world.

Next - Write a sentence tying all the facts together.

How about ....

Many people believe in Bigfoot ... or ... A lot of evidence points to Bigfoot being real.

Let's try another angle here ...

Imagine you are caught out past curfew by a police officer.

You got a text that someone in your family was sick so you were rushing home to help.

The police officer wouldn't listen to you, and said you had to appear before a judge.

You decided to write a letter to the judge.  What would your thesis be?    (What is your main point?)

- Write out the main point you would be arguing to the judge.

Next,

Write a half page short story - FICTION - about a kid who goes to a crazy new school and has a weird first day.

A day where everything goes terribly wrong.

Use a TON of adjectives.    10 adjectives = a 3 on the Marzano scale.

20 adjectives  = a 4 on our grading scale.

E.X. Text Time

Keep it on tight Yellow - in your seats

I'm coming around to grade these ... starting with work yesterday

Finish  -

1. VIII - XI - 21 ?s   2. XII - XIII - skills check     3. XIV - XV - my page

Next - Both grades read pg. 6 / 7, answer questions pg. 7

ALL WORK needs done and checked off by me.

  • Before Reading   -   page 8 / 9

Social Studies Tuesday 9.9

First,

Socrates - one of the smartest teachers to ever live - said you need to know yourself.  If you don't look at the man in the mirror, your life is a waste.

So -

What tattoo would you get?  Why?

1.  Draw the tattoo using art supplies, and  2. write a paragraph about why you'd get this piece of art.

LAST

On the same paper as bell

Knowing how to act in different situations is part of growing up, and being successful.

What are some examples of different situations where you can act and speak relaxed - and when you have to act and speak as "proper" as you can?

Where is AAE a good choice, and where is SE a good choice?
